Where to Stay in Santorini: Fira & Oia

Santroni is even more dramatic and breathtaking than I expected.  I stayed in both Fira and Oia, so can recommend two hotels that I’d stay in again.

When I looked at where to stay in Santorini, three areas came up: Oia, Imerovigli and Fira.  Between the three, I liked the hotel options in Fira (or “Thira”) the best.  Fira is relatively flat, there are plenty of restaurants and bars, and some incredible caldera views.  Geographically, it is closest to the port (I came on a ferry from Paros) and has views of Oia to the north as well as the center of the caldera.

I stayed in Hotel Kavalari and booked directly through the hotel.  The hotel staff was friendly, and helped us arrange a catamaran tour around the island.

The hotel has stairs winding throughout the property.

My favorite part was the terrance

The rooms are beautiful cave rooms built into the side of a cliff.

The continental breakfast is light, colorful and comes with classic Santorini views.

The hotel is connected by outdoor stairs between levels.

This is my favorite Greek hotel, and I’d stay here again!

In Oia, I stayed in Oia Mare Villas and I’d recommend staying here again. Its a little pricier than Fira, but this one was reasonably priced for the cave vibe I was hoping for.

We took a taxi and relied on a courier to help bring our bags from one hotel to the next. The stairs are a lot, so make sure to make arrangements with your luggage.

Oia was very crowded even in the off season.  Expect crowds at sunset, as the tip of Santorini is known for some epic sunsets.

The hotel has a stunning pool and lounge chairs available for guests.

The room also has a small balcony overlooking the water.

Even the shower had a cave vibe.

I loved the white cave room style of the bedroom.

I’m happy I was able to experience Fira and Oia. If I had to choose only one and was on a budget, I’d stay in Fira for the cost, proximity to restaurants and bars, and less stairs.

However, if you want to splurge and enjoy a fancy hotel, Oia Mare was the fancy Greek experience I was envisioning.
