Isle of Skye: Cuillin Hills Hotel Review

I’m still dreaming about my stay at the 4 star Cuillin Hills Hotel. I usually go for modest accommodations that are safe and in a walkable location, but for some reason decided to splurge a little on this trip and it was 100% worth it. The location was perfect (we were dropped off by our tour) and we never had to worry about leaving for meals. If you’re looking for a comfortable and very nice place to sleep with some incredible food right outside your door, this is the place for you.

The first morning we woke up it was sunny and we got a clear reflection of the houses.

The weather on Skye changes pretty quickly, but either way, I loved the waterfront view of the hotel.

The Cuillin Hills Hotel sits on a hill overlooking Portree harbor’s iconic colorful houses. I originally looked to stay in the town of Portree, but since we were spending the majority of the day touring Isle of Skye and the evening at the hotel, I wanted it to be more than just a place to sleep.

Isle of Skye is also known as the Isle of Mist. This is the view the evening we arrived, for reference on what I mean about the weather.

I cannot say enough great things about the staff - everyone from the front desk, to the restaurant servers to the bartenders were friendly and helpful, and made Cuillin Hills feel like home for a few days.

The hotel had a game room and sitting area. It felt cozy, like I was staying at my wealthy relative’s home for the weekend.

The fire was exactly what we needed after a day touring the Isle of Skye.

See the games under the coffee table? We broke those out and played for hours by the fire.

The hotel is filled with comfortable common areas. This area was open in the evenings to enjoy a drink from the bar.

The hotel was built in 1865 by the Macdonalds as a lodge and still has an authentic feel without feeling “old”.

Our room had a water view of the misty harbor.

I loved the bowl of fresh fruit in the sitting area!

The decor was modern and regal with some local touches: note the Hairy Coo painting on the left.

The beds were very comfortable and the hotel was quiet, so I slept really well.

We also enjoyed dinner here (I forgot to take photos, was too busy enjoying the meal!) The food was incredible, and I found out after we left that the chef has a Michelin star. A huge plus of this hotel is that you don’t have to worry about getting to dinner or breakfast - you can make a reservation at the hotel’s restaurant.

I was a little bummed this breakfast had to end…

I’d absolutely stay here again when I visit Isle of Skye. I was sad to leave and felt so welcome.

If you’re wondering if this 4 star accommodation is worth the price, the answer is yes, especially if you have time to enjoy the property in the evening and for breakfast and dinner.
